Experience the beauty and inspiration of youth art! After camping for a few days and experiencing the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, Sigurd Olson Environmental Institute youth program participants took to the brush and, through words and image, shared what they feel is important about stewardship of natural places, especially Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. Local youth participants came from Odanah, Ashland, Mellen, Red Cliff, Iron River and Washburn. All participants experienced their ‘backyard’ in new and inspiring ways!
This project was developed and implemented by SOEI Youth Outreach Programs in the summer of 2021 with the help of Friends of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, Lost Creek Adventures, Lake Superior Tall Ships, SPARK, Bad River Youth Programs, Red Cliff Family and Human Services and PMG Charters.
Stewardship flags will be on display at the Washburn Cultural Center December 1-24, 2021. Visitors can view the art Tuesday-Saturday, 12:00-4:00.
The flags will then be shown at the Sigurd Olson Environmental Institute March 1- 31, where visitors will have the opportunity to bid on flags they want to own through a month long silent auction. The silent auction closes on March 31st at 5:00pm. (Please note that youth artists will be contacted about donating their art for the silent auction.) Winners will be contacted on Sigurd Olson’s birthday, April 4th!
